S&P 500 Spyders (SPY) are one of the most liquid index ETFs available. Options on SPY are increasingly liquid as evidenced by tighter front month spreads, and recent market volatility has increased trading liquidity as well.
Ultra S&P 500 ETF (SSO) is a leveraged ETF. If the index goes up 10 percent, this ETF should go up 20 percent. Note that the double leverage also affects the fund on downside moves, so market timing is important for trading SSO effectively.
UltraShort S&P 500 ETF (SDS) goes up in price when the underlying index moves down in price and is leveraged 2x. For example, if the S&P drops by 22% this fund should go up by about 44%.
Short S&P500 ProShares (SH) is an inverse ETF fund for the S&P 500, and options are available on this fund.
